HOW WE TEST
Our testing methodology
Every score on this site comes from the same hands-on process. Here is exactly how we test and rate each VPN.
Speed
We run repeated download, upload and latency tests on the same servers at the same times of day, across several weeks, using the WireGuard-based protocol where available. We report typical real-world speeds, not best-case numbers.
Privacy & security
We review each provider’s jurisdiction, logging policy and independent audit history, then verify the kill switch, check for DNS and IP leaks, and confirm the encryption and protocols on offer.
Streaming
We test each VPN against Netflix in multiple regions, plus Disney+, BBC iPlayer and others, recording how reliably it unblocks content and whether streams hold up in HD and 4K.
Pricing & value
We track the introductory price, the renewal price and the money-back guarantee, and weigh them against features like simultaneous device limits so the value score reflects what you actually pay over time.
Usability
We use the apps on Windows, macOS, iOS and Android, judging how easy they are to set up and live with day to day, and we test the support channels with real questions.
Our scoring
Each VPN earns a score out of 10 that blends speed, privacy, streaming, value and usability. Scores reflect testing only — commissions never change a rating.
